For the first time, we are going to post on our main page something which has no direct relevance to New York hip hop. However, the staggering growth of the KONY 2012 video and its associated movement is something that has touched millions of people in the past few days, us included.
The KONY 2012 video, produced by the Invisible Children movement, is spreading throughout the internet, and for good reason. While there are thousands of causes to support, the brilliance of this movement to connect years of offline efforts to an online call to action is unparalleled, though many factors in technology, social media and world affairs, have helped set up the growth of this phenomenon.
To our New York area hip hop community and all others who may stumble upon this post: Take a few moments to put aside the work you’re doing. Take a few minutes to put aside whatever issues you may be going through. Watch this video, learn about a worthwhile movement, and expand your perspective. Whether or not you choose to participate in this movement, this video can teach many lessons.
Even as we strive to make our own mark in our relatively tiny world of local hip hop journalism, we look admiringly toward those with new ideas and worthwhile endeavors that will help make this world a better place. Though the issues raised by this movement are far reaching and far more significant to the grand scheme of things than what we are working to do, we are inspired by the message and methods behind the KONY 2012 campaign, and felt it necessary to do our part to help spread this message.
