The shooting death of Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, has taken over the nation’s interest in recent weeks, dominating major media coverage and sparking on- and offline campaigns protesting police handling and the lack of an arrest in the case.

While some criticism has been leveled against big-name hip hop artists for relatively little public reaction, artist/activist Jasiri X has been receiving deserved coverage for “A Song For Trayvon,” his reinterpretation of The Throne’s “No Church In The Wild,” as a pointed chronicle of the events that led to the national outrage.

In conjunction with MoveOn.org, ColofofChange.org, Akila Worksongs and Kevin Powell, a community rally for Trayvon Martin doubled as a live video shoot for a spirited performance of the song, complete with live backing band and vocalists. The video, produced by ART NOT WAR and co-produced with AOCNetwork.com, was filmed at The House of the Lord Church in Brooklyn, and is quickly spreading through the internet as interest in the case, including a federal investigation of the police proceedings, continues.

The video for “A Song For Trayvon” captures the live performance, as well as some imagery from the rally, ending with chants of “No justice, no peace.” It was directed by Laura Dawn and David Ambrose.
