YC The Cynic, quiet for a minute, has begun to whet our collective appetite for his upcoming full release with “Hello, Newman!”, an intricate display of the young spitter’s lyrical acumen. If you’ve been following YC The Cynic (named one of our very first “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck“), you’d realize this is nothing but another in a long line of consistently strong releases from the Bronx wordsmith. It’s a short two-verse effort that should easily leave listeners eager for the planned February release of GNK.
To be fair, the JahLaeer-produced “Hello, Newman!” fits YC The Cynic’s old-soul taste for beats, and it’s a solid bassline-driven track, but YC may be getting to a point where his tracks need to better match the level of his verbal prowess, which means beats can’t be just solid, they need to be… more solider. Again, nothing wrong with this track in of itself, but would hate to see YC ever fall into the dope-lyricist-who-needs-better-beats zone a la a Canibus or Rakim.
But hey, I’m just one guy. I may be getting ahead of myself with over-analysis. But let’s be honest, there aren’t too many cats spitting bars of this caliber. Endangered species. Worth protecting.
In any event, check out the newness, and let us know what you think. Cuz either way, this is worth the listen.
Who says the Bronx is dying off, indeed.
