Skyzoo will be touching the stage at Brooklyn’s Southpaw on Thursday, August 25, headlining a Skill or Be Skilled / DJBooth.net production which will also feature several wordsmiths and DJs from the New York City area.
Skyzoo has been steadily raising his stock in recent months. We caught him tearing it down out in Austin, as part of the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival earlier this year, and a few times since in and around the tri-state, always to great reception.
His latest mixtape, The Great Debater, topped our June edition of “10 New York Hip Hop Albums, Mixtapes and EPs Worth Hearing,” and for good reason, as we’ve seen the project receive acclaim from many sources since then.
It stays on replay over here, for what it’s worth.
Joining the bill, a few other talented MCs and DJs who all have been similarly increasing their respective profiles.
L.A. recently won the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival Show & Prove competition, and opened up for Q-Tip on the main day of the week-long event.
FinaL OutlaW was named one of Birthplace Magazine’s “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck” last year, in part for his fiery, passionate delivery, and lyrical substance. After being quiet for a bit, we see FinaL OutlaW is beginning to rev up again, recently dropping “Gossip Is For The Birds,” and we’re excited to see what’s in store.
PremRock (formerly Premonition) has also been busy, spending part of 2011 overseas touring Europe, and is now back around the way, working on joint album project with DJ/producer/engineer Willie Green, who is also on the bill, likely to perform his signature live beat crafting. Check out their first drop from the collaboration, “Diary of a Dreamer”
Jesse Abraham, whose album One Day helped raise his visibility recently, enough to garner the Lyricist of the Year award at the recent Underground Music Awards. We’ve been watching JA since his Alphabutter days, always throwing out words like creative and eclectic and experimental, but always in a good way, hoping that others would find enjoyment from his unique brand of hip hop, which seems to be happening.
Last, but certainly not least, the talented DJ/engineer DJ Sosa will helping to hold down the musical fort for the night on the wheels of steel.
Skyzoo’s The Great Debater is scheduled to be re-released shortly on iTunes with bonus songs. If you haven’t copped it yet, we suggest you do.
