The Props To Hip Hop Live Band Tribute series is back with another installment, once again rounding up a talented group of New York City musicians, rappers, singers and DJs for their inventive salute to hip hop’s greatest performers. The coalition, organized by Freestyle Monday’s co-host IllSpokinn and Tru Statement Entertainment, will pay tribute to West Coast hip hop icon Snoop Dogg, performing his seminal album Doggystyle, in its entirety, skits included. The September 1, 2011 show follows in the footsteps of previously successful events which have paid homage to groups like A Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees and Outkast.
More than mere karaoke, past Props to Hip Hop shows have assembled many of New York City’s brightest hip hop and R&B talents, backed by live instrumentation, to perform songs, from top hits to obscure album cuts, originally recorded by many of hip hop’s greatest groups. After witnessing and reviewing the original event, a tribute to A Tribe Called Quest, we called the series, “a perfect blend of party plus performance,” a description that many others seem to agree with, as subsequent shows have grown in audience and participation.
The Props to Hip Hop Tribute concerts were named one of Birthplace Magazine’s “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck.”
Ina slight format change, instead of an assortment of songs from an artist or group’s entire catalog, Props to Hip Hop have introduced the “Album Series,” where the collective will recreate an album in its entirety, front to back, including any skits or interludes. Kicking off this adapted concept, Snoop Dogg’s G-Funk-styled, classic solo album Doggystyle.
We highly recommend the series, and will certainly be in the house to document and enjoy the event, and suggest all reading to do the same.
