NBC Miami’s Peter Bailey sat down with Fabolous for an in-depth interview that covered several topics including the state of New York Hip Hop, Fabolous’ work with DJ Khaled, his involvement with the VH1 series Love & Hip Hop and his charitable efforts, for a segment on Bailey’s NiteCap program.
The interview, broken down into four YouTube segments, was a casual conversation with the Brooklyn hip hop journeyman, named one of Birthplace Magazine’s “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck.” Of particular interest was Fab’s answer to the standard questions regarding New York City’s status in the hip hop landscape. While reverting to a bit of a cliche answer at first, suggesting rather generically that New York just needs to be more “competitive,” Fabolous had valid points regarding New York’s unique hip hop perspective, and how the region, sticking stubbornly to its own vibe, may have isolated itself from the greater hip hop universe.
Says Fabolous, “A lot of places relate to each other more than they relate to New York City. I come from New York so me going other places, from just doing music, has shown me how Cleveland is more relatable to Chicago and Chicago is related to Houston. They have different little parts about them that make them different but they’re more relatable to each other than they are to New York. So it kinda isolated New York a little bit and I think they have gotten isolated musically too. They just want to make music for them, instead of making music for the masses.”
Aside from his take on New York hip hop, Fabolous discusses, as we noted in our write-up, his success at delivering music that pleases both genders. Bailey also inquires how Fabolous felt about his portrayal during Love & Hip Hop, his current music workload and his desire to bring back his community’s local basketball tournament.
