THE KICKOFF: The Show & Prove Super Bowl
In an evolving music world, years of formulaic commercialization has left hip hop music in a fragmented shape. New York, the birthplace and long-time undisputed Mecca of the genre, has lost its rap luster, in relation to other areas of the county that have surged in recent years.
Fortunately, the Brooklyn Bodega organization has found a way to consistently organize and curate this multi-faceted hip hop festival, for lovers of the past, present and future of hip hop, with a decidedly New York feel.

If you didn’t attend the Festival kickoff, the Show & Prove Super Bowl, a culmination of several preliminary competitions designed to select an up-and-coming artist to open on the main stage, you missed the opportunity to discover new music, from young, energetic artists like preliminary show winners Clear Soul Forces, out of Detroit, Chris Faust and Brooklyn’s own L.A., who won the overall competition for the opportunity to perform early on the main day, for the hundreds assembled at Brooklyn Park Plaza.

In a world where many rail against the repetitiveness of mainstream radio, attending such shows are a perfect but often underutilized remedy, allowing for the random, inexpensive discovery of new music in a live performance setting. New York City is ripe with such events, and the Show & Prove series made it easy for you.
The Super Bowl event also featured performances by Artifacts, J-Live, Oddisee and Camp Lo. If you hadn’t already been familiar, you would have been introduced to the exciting hybrid venue Brooklyn Bowl, a smorgasbord of an entertainment venue that, among other big name events, also features regular dance party DJ sets by Questlove of The Roots.
