Sha Stimuli
The Break Up: Part 2 (The Proposal) [MIXTAPE]
During my fledgling rap career, my father, a college professor of Sociology and part-time music historian, told me that if I wanted to succeed, I should make love songs. At the time, I questioned the logic. “Dad,” I said, “This is rap. It’s not really about love songs.” He told me that no matter the genre, love songs would do well. Though Sha Stimuli specifically mentions at the beginning of The Break Up Part 2 that he did not go “the women-getting route,” he and DJ Victorious deliver a great package of relationship-themed songs, many of which are radio-worthy (if radio was radio-worthy), suggesting that maybe Pops was on to something after all. Varying the content from lamenting lost love to dealing with current relationships and the temptations that come along, Sha Stimuli covers many aspects of life in love. Yes, there’s the obligatory detailing of sexual prowess here and there, but Sha Stimuli delivers an honest, introspective, fun-to-listen-to collection of moments that many of us can relate to. Standouts include “Help,” “Look At Us,” “Hard,” the excellent, thought-provoking essay “The Happening,” and an emotional experiment in storytelling and lyrical dexterity, “Untitled.”
