Under RYU BLACK, the current moniker of former Monster Island Czars member MeccaGodZilla, Perfect Heaven is an intriguing display of a thoughtfully themed album, which is accurately self-described as an “audio musical.” Designed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Capcom’s legendary video game Streetfighter, RYU BLACK peppers the game’s music and sound effects throughout the album, while masterfully creating and following a uniquely game-styled plot, delivered through well-voiced verbal interludes and songs which coincide with the story line. RYU BLACK, a frequent visitor to Japan and aficionado of the culture, infuses his project with various Japanese references, helping add authenticity to an inventive and highly enjoyable recorded performance. Standouts include “Satsui No Hadou,” “Heaven,” “Chun Li,” “Yama,” and RYU BLACK gets bonus points (and a 1 UP) for exquisitely executing a thoughtful concept without sacrificing musical or lyrical quality. A well-rounded, must-listen project.
