The yearly hip hop and R&B extravaganza will host its usual supply of big name artists, as well as up and coming performers, performing in a pre-event area dubbed the Hot 97 Summer Jam Festival, an event which includes the culmination of several MC battles as well.
2010’s Summer Jam delivered headliners that included Drake, Nicki Minaj and Trey Songz, among others. In most years, Summer Jam manages to pull off a couple of big surprises, and in the past, historic appearances have been made on the Summer Jam stage, including the 2001 surprise appearance by Michael Jackson.
This year, initial show lineup was announced during Angie Martinez‘ radio show on May 2. According to Martinez and other Hot 97 personnel taking part in the announcement, this year’s main stage participants include: one of our April 2011 “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck,” Fabolous, the resurgent Dipset crew, the buzzing (no pun intended) Wiz Khalifa, as well as Waka Flocka Flame, Rick Ross and G-Unit soldier (and another “5 Reasons” recipient) Lloyd Banks (and friends). Among the bigger names, a back-to-back appearance by Drake, an appearance by Lil Wayne (and his daddy Birdman).
Angie Martinez saved the “big, big” deal for last, announcing that Chris Brown is scheduled to appear as well.
Martinez and the Hot 97 crew also hinted toward a couple of “surprises” in store, though without giving many details.
2011’s Hot 97 Summer Jam, presented by Boost Mobile, will take place on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the New Meadowlands Stadium.
