Nicki Minaj: Lil’ Kim Diss – Nicki Minaj “Tragedy” – Lil’ Kim Diss Track

Nicki Minaj is not backing down from the Lil’ Kim controversy quietly, and after a short amount of time where it seemed as if the “beef” between the rapstresses was dying down, Minaj takes another blow at the former Queen of commercial hip hop with “Tragedy,” a highly abbreviated verse/track which made the rounds this weekend. It was initially not entirely clear where “Tragedy” is slated to appear, or if there is more to come, as it appears to only have been a verse, slated for other appearances (perhaps Lil’ Wayne), but according to Miss Info, Nicki Minaj is preparing a new mixtape, and by the looks of the purported cover she posted, it is straight retaliation, directed at Lil’ Kim. Lil’ Kim recently released Black Friday, a diss-themed mixtape directed at the current woman of the hip hop hour, though we’re not sure if anyone who ordered it, actually got it yet.

Nicki Minaj - Tragedy Mixtape Cover ArtworkWe haven’t thus far really “reported” on the feud, but in short, we think Nicki’s great (we’re not going to argue with anyone over this, for our reasoning, check our 2010 year-end “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck“), and we will always love Big Momma, but Lil’ Kim really didn’t need to go the battle route.

That being said, the on-record battle aspect of hip hop goes way back, and we do enjoy the competitive nature of such displays. The fact that Minaj let people wait a bit before dropping a diss record, hearkens back to a time before it was possible to record, film a video for, upload, and have the whole world see your answer record about 16 seconds after the initial diss record is released.

To be fair, Minaj’s quick verse is adequate, not the best verbal assault we’ve heard from her, but serves as an acceptable salvo in the ongoing battle. We’ll be on the lookout to see if she will be releasing an entire diss-themed mixtape in response to Lil Kim’s (admittedly, despite being Nicki Minaj supporters, we think that might be a little overkill).

Anyway, here’s “Tragedy,” the track is reported to have been produced by Hit-Boy SC and Boi-1da.

Hot or not?
