Lloyd Banks would up on one of our “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck” editions, after a strong year where the secondary G-Unit member did a good job of standing in a solo spotlight, particularly after the explosive success of “Beamer, Benz or Bentley.” His album, The Hunger For More 2, became anticipated, fueled by additional well-received efforts like “Start It Up,” with Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, Fabolous and Ryan Leslie.
For Banks, it was a pretty good year. (“Beamer” recently won Lloyd Banks and Juelz Santana a New York Music Award).
In ’11, next up on the gritty wordsmith’s to-do list is a follow up to his Cold Corner mixtape, Cold Corner 2 (um, ok but what’s with the these titles?). Anyway, Cold Corner 2 should be dropping soon, and according to ThisIs50.com, “Getting To It Mandatory” is the first release from that effort.
We had it last night, and maybe should have posted it then, as it’s absolutely ripe for a late, smokey night, New York City, creep-in-the-ride, thumping system, moody, gritty vibe. Either way, Banks is still holding his own, as we said back in October, “in the mainstream rap scene among those tough-guy rap types who spit that grimy, money, rap star talk.”
