XXL Magazine recently released it’s 2011 Freshmen issue with their 2011 Freshman class, highlighting the MCs who they believe are the “most promising” new jacks of the year. While the list, as always, caused fervid discussion and debate, the fact remains that Fred The Godson, Diggy Simmons, Big K.R.I.T., Yelawolf, Cyhi Da Prynce, Mac Miller, Lil Twist, YG, Lil B, Kendrick Lamar and Meek Mill have the spotlight on them at the moment, and it’s up to them to live up to that potential.
Part of that process includes the traditional XXL Freshman Concert (technically, we think it’s the FreshmAn Concert), which features (most of) the chosen few for a live performance, orchestrated by the mag. This year, it was held at the B.B. King Blues Club (a venue that previously was named one of our “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck,”) for a four hour long exposition of hungry rap talent.
Lil B was the only no-show, so the New York-heavy audience got to see firsthand the collection of talent XXL is touting. To be honest, we were still recovering from our SXSW adventure, so we sat this one out, but much captured video exists from the event. TheMaskedGorilla.com put together a nice 15-minute video recap, including special appearances by Vado, Big Sean, Rev Run, A-Trak and Pusha T, so we thought we’d share with you folks.
If flicks are your thing, swing on over to www.techieinnyc.com, for a good collection of pictures from the event, and XXL themselves for a good recap, as well as a few nice photos as well.
