South By Southwest, affectionately known as SXSW in print, and “South by” verbally, is an annual music, film and interactive conference and festival held in Austin, Texas. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the festival has grown from a small, 700-person gathering in 1986 to more than 36,000 registrants.
The interactive portion of the event, or SXSWi has often been referred to as “spring break for geeks,” while the music side of the festival now boasts more than 2,000 bands playing in more than 90 different arenas throughout the city from March 15 through March 20, though the bulk of the music events occur on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Hip hop at SXSW, a traditionally indie-rock-oriented event, has been steadily growing over the years, and 2011 promises the largest representation of hip hop music culture yet, with dozens of artists expected to perform, from all corners of the world.
Of course, if you know us, you know we’re mainly concerned with our corner of the world. While we’ll certainly be on hand to check out megastars scheduled to appear such as B.o.B., Cee-Lo, raucous newcomers Odd Future and (rumored) appearances by Kanye West and Eminem, we’re mainly concerned with checking in on our New York metropolitan area brethren, including folks like Homeboy Sandman, Talib Kweli, DJ Premier, Saigon, the Wu-Tang Clan, Jean Grae, Smoke DZA, Roc Marciano, and dozens more hometown representatives.
If you’re in the same frame of mind, we’ve made it easy to parse out who from the tri-state will be invading this year’s SXSW. Check the chart below for dates, artist, venue and times. As new information becomes available, and new artists are added to shows, we’ll be updating this chart, so you’ll always have the latest information about which NY-area hip hop artists you can check out.
Birthplace Magazine will be on hand at the festival, so be sure to add us on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare or email. If you’re in Austin between March 17-21, we’d love to meet up with you!
BONUS: Check out NY artist Kosha Dillz’ article, “How To Take SXSW On, Even If They Didn’t Take You,” containing some good insight for artists who are hitting up the festival.
(A special note regarding times: Artists set to perform after midnight are listed on the date the showcase began. For example, Homeboy Sandman will appear at The Marq at 12:15am. Technically, it’s the 19th (after midnight) but we have it listed as the 18th, meaning, the night of the 18th, you are out and about, and at 12:15am, Homeboy Sandman performs. Hope that makes sense. Exact set times are listed if known, otherwise, time range of the event is listed. Also, times may change. Check the official SXSW schedule to be sure: www.sxsw.com/schedule)
