Das Racist (as in that’s racist, not like German), have taken steps closer to reaching a possible tipping point in the last year, gaining a strong alt-hip hop following while reaching mainstream press outlets such as Playboy and the New York Times. A group who gained notoriety for a comically strange assault on the combination Taco Bell and Pizza Hut phenomenon may not have won fans from the traditional hip hop camp, but their witty, outlandish style has earned them brownie points with bloggers and mainstream media who appreciate a more left-field, experimental form of hip hop.
In 2010, Das Racist released two mixtapes, Shut Up, Dude and Sit Down, Man, earning even more media praise. “Anyone who initially turned up their nose to this hip-hop duo,” claims PrefixMag.com, “should take notice.” MTV, the New Yorker and Pitchfork all heaped similar praise.
Though definitely not for the 106 and Park crowd, Das Racist seems to be successfully riding a fine line of smart, silly and purposefully sloppy hip hop punk, nonchalantly breaking all the rules of rap, coming close to, but never quite crossing over to parody. Their constant tour schedule brings Das Racist to Austin, Texas for several appearances at South By Southwest Music 2011 (SXSW), the yearly festival this year taking place from March 15-20. Das Racist are lined up for at least three appearances, Wednesday, March 16 at The Speakeasy (showcase begins at 1 p.m.), and nearly back to back sets late on Friday, March 18 (after midnight), 12:15 a.m. at The Phoenix and 1:30 a.m. at Emo’s Main Room.
They’re goofy, and fun. But are they real deal next level stuff or hipster novelty?
Das the question.
