A night promising a diverse mix of hip hop talent, Bars Mitvah proved to be just that, as onlookers witnessed songs chronicling a difficult street life, a song about yoga, a Hebrew crowd call-and-response and a soul-stirring songstress. Oh. And xlyophones!

Bars Mitzvah, of which Birthplace Magazine was a proud media sponsor, featured performances from independent and underground artists from throughout the region, including Premonition (who recently dropped “Kingship,” a smooth Kon-produced collaboration with FinaL OutlaW, a “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck” honoree, Silent Knight and DJ M-Tri), Jeanette Berry (who we haven’t featured, but is a Birthplace-worthy chanteuse for sure) , Kyle Rapps (who has a new joint out with Joell Ortiz) and Kosha Dillz (who is currently on his 32-stop “Gimme Five” tour).

Jesse Abraham (who debuted his video for “Spiderman on Vitamins,” and is releasing an EP follow-up to his Bars & No Bull release on March 1, titled One Day) performed, as did AOK-Collective member Fresh Daily (who we’ve happily featured a couple of times), and Top $ Raz, who closed out the night with a spirited performance, backed by his band. Top $ Raz also recently dropped “The Plague,” a great collaboration with YC The Cynic (named one of our inaugural “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck”) over production by Brown Bag AllStars’ J57, and will be celebrating the release of his new project, The New Flesh, on February 23, also at Southpaw.

With hip hop, a little R&B, freestyles, live bands, a couple of surprise guests (Eric Sosa, Kalil Kash, Adrienne Mack-Davis, P.So among others) the multi-talented DJ Sosa on the wheels, an eclectic group of hungry, talented performers, Bars Mitzvah helped warm up a cold Brooklyn night. Mazel Tov!
