Though Kanye West spends a great deal of time IN New York, we can’t really qualify him as a New Yorker, but veteran video director Hype Williams is, so we can satisfy our journalistic integrity to stick to NY-are artists and share with you the video for Kanye West’s “All of the Lights,” since we do tend to admire West’s incessant creativity, in all forms.
Of the bevy of artists actually on the song, including Rihanna, Kid Cudi, Alicia Keys, Elton John, John Legend, Ryan Leslie, Tony Williams, Charlie Wilson, Elly Jackson, Fergie and The-Dream, only Kid Cudi and Rihanna appear in the video. And boy does Rihanna appear!
With all of the lights constantly pulsating, the video is a flashy, high-energy counterpart to the equally-animated song, mixing storyline footage with clips of West, Rihanna and Kid Cudi (and a few police cars) throughout.
While the video for “All of the Lights” doesn’t come close to taking the artistic chances utilized for Kanye West’s 35-minute long Runaway film, it does the job.
