The buzz on 50 Cent these days, aside from his Sleek headphones, beef with Q from WorldStarHipHop and possibly Dr. Dre, seems to be that the hip hop mogul has begun to drop songs here and there that are a bit more reminiscent of “the old 50,” with the gritty, grimy, issh-talking gunshot-survivor-swagger that helped launch his career.
Further evidence of 50 Cent hearkening to his more musically aggressive days, “When I Come Back” rides a mean sounding guitar and boom-bap track, with 50 letting anyone who cares that he is indeed “back on this shit again.” Not sure where the music is from, or if it’s something new, but it is a bit of a head-nodder.
Despite changing information regarding what was to be 50 Cent’s next project Black Magic, a braggadocios, hard-edged 50 Cent is a usually-welcome guilty pleasure, and in this regard, “When I Come Back” works. We’ll be watching to see how much 50 looks to break out of his corporate shell and take it back to basics.
Don’t call it a come back.
