Oprah Winfrey’s favorite rapper (out of one), Jay-Z, joined the Queen of All Media for her Down Under television adventure, helping Ms. Winfrey surprise a school for disadvantaged boys in Sydney, Australia, with $1 million worth of laptop computers.
Polly Dunning, a substitute teacher at the Canterbury Boys School, wrote a letter to the show, which Oprah had her read in front of her students. “We all love hip hop music,” Dunning read, “including Jay-Z. Jay-Z has let my students see that you can come from the bottom and reach the top.”
Moments later, to the near-orgasmic-delight of the actually-kinda-hot-if-you-like-overbites sub, the hip hop icon, who we named one of 2010’s year end “5 Reasons Why NY Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck,” walked out and greeted the students, who were, initially at least, much less orgasmic about the surprise.
But then, Jay-Z sat in on some music classes, said a few inspirational words and then with the schoolboys watching, Oprah announced every student (and teacher) would receive a copy of Jay-Z’s book Decoded, and a laptop, courtesy of Microsoft and HP.
At that point, the boys finally lost their collective issh.
