Well, everyone knows that Virginia’s Skillz had made a name for himself rocking his annual end-of-the-year “Rap Up,” but New York MC Bekay has also been doing the same thing, for almost as long, and released his rap recap of the year that was.
This year, Bekay goes in over J. Coles’ “Who Dat” track, touching on many aspects of popular culture, people and topics, including Drake, Rihanna, President Obama, Four Loko, Mark Zukerberg and Oprah.
The Brooklyn artist managed to get in in a few shots at Eli Manning, Manny Pacquiao, Kanye West, a “filthy” ex-girlfriend, Young Money and Lil Wayne. Jeez, Bekay, tell us how you really feel.
As for Skillz, he came through with the 2010 edition of his “Rap Up” with a little more laid back delivery. Skillz reminded us about the Nas/Kelis court drama, the 50 Cent/Rick Ross beef, the earthquake in Haiti, “Beamer, Benz or Bentley,” Mel Gibson, Montana Fishburne, Antoine Dodson, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and WikiLeaks.
Both MCs spoke, usually comically, about Lebron James, the BP oil spill, 50 Tyson, Lindsay Lohan, Jersey Shore and Justin Bieber
Lil Wayne also caught a couple digs from Skillz, as well as Kat Stacks and Raz B. And while Skillz took a moment to remind listeners that the Rap Up concept is his thing, we enjoyed hearing them both, reminding us about the crazy year we just had, as we prepare for the crazy year in front of us.
Be sure to check out Birthplace Magazine’s own year in review, as we give you “5 Reasons” why New York hip hop didn’t suck in 2010.
