We’ve been clear in our support for Queens-bred Nicki Minaj over here at Birthplace Magazine, (catching some flack here and there from even our most ardent supporters for it), but making sure, of course, that we balance our coverage with a wide variety of New York-area talent. Howevere, as we admitted to one of our commenters, it would almost be a journalistic faux pas to ignore the fascinating phenomenon that is Nicki Minaj, from a hip hop fan standpoint as well as a music business perspective.
Despite our ongoing interest and coverage, including Nicki Minaj’s recent concert at Hammerstein Ballroom, we have chosen to stay clear of the Lil’ Kim/Nicki Minaj spat. We’ve also not posted up EVERY single bit of Nicki Minaj news bit (i.e., her Rolling Stone cover story), so believe us, we are attempting to be judicious in our coverage.
That being said, when the Twittersphere came alive last night during the airing on MTV’s Nicki Minaj documentary, My Time Now, eliciting a response from many people along the lines of, “I have more respect for Nicki Minaj after watching this documentary,” it seems as if the show may have converted quite a bit of non-believers. As some who have always thought there to be more than what sits atop the Nicki Minaj surface, we were glad that the documentary showed the “different side” of Minaj that many were commenting about.
In any event, even we didn’t get to see the whole thing, so if you didn’t either, and are interested, here it is. Let’s watch together, shall we?
