Kalil Kash has an ever-so-slightly off-kilter conversational rhyme style that can sound like an contradictory mix of friendly flow and condescending lecture, with adlibs dancing between sharpened enunciation and a verbal fingerprint vaguely reminiscent of veteran CL Smooth. Add a couple clever punchlines, and a sprinkling of semi-obscure references and you’ll find an MC who is never too harsh, nor ever sterile or bland, exemplified perfectly in his previous standout work, “Bang,” and also here, in the KO Beatz-produced “Delorean.”
In the past, we had hoped to deliver a review of his full length project The Exit Method, but since we took forever, it looks like we’ll just end up checking for Elise, the album on which “Delorean” will appear, or perhaps, in the meantime, Kalil Kash’s upcoming mixtape, Madness, which the New Jersey MC has been dropping hints about in recent days. In the meantime, if “Delorean” or “Bang” tickle your hip hop fancy, be sure to cop The Exit Method as well.
With an approachable nature, audibly as well as in real life, we expect to see Kalil’s following continue to grow in the months ahead, with his upcoming projects likely to help secure a more visible place among the NY/NJ hip hop underground movement.
