Bobbito Garcia Interview [The T.R.O.Y. Blog]

With the controversy over Columbia University’s decision to remove Sucio Smash as head of the Squeeze Radio Show on WKCR dying down, it appears as if the tradition of the show, dating back 20 years with the original incarnation, the Stretch and Bobbito Show, will simply have to live on in memory (and on cassettes). After hearing briefly from Stretch Armstrong in response to our coverage of the situation, we just came across an interview with his partner in NY-hip-hop-radio-history-crime, Bobbito Garcia, with the good folks at The T.R.O.Y. Blog.

In the interview, Bobbito Garcia reminisces on Big L’s appearances on the show and the now-well-known Big L/Jay-Z appearance, Garcia’s record label Álala, tales of playing “no-label” records on the show, and freestyle sessions including hip hop heavyweights like Nas, KRS One, Camron and Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

Columbia University Ousts Sucio Smash as Host of Squeeze Radio Show Bobbito spoke on the transition of the Squeeze Radio program over the years, including the latest developments, telling interviewer Verge, “I told [Sucio] I was like yo, if the show is done then move on. You know, like you did a wonderful eight years and got a great opportunity to share music with people around the world.”
