Can an underground NYC hip hop artist be critically acclaimed? Can he have a reputation that precedes him to the point where downloading a free mixtape offering from him is a no-brainer? Yes, if he is P.SO (formerly P. Casso), the A-OK Collective member following up his sonic gem Suicide By Jellyfish with, what he calls his “last free project,” the aptly titled, “More Jelly”.
The “Earth Tone King” delivers a just-slightly more rugged sound with More Jelly than its immediate predecessor, with production by Large Professor (!), 6th Sense, The Dopplgangaz, 2 Hungry Bros., Prefuse 73, DJ Nymble Paws, and J57, plus a couple of self-produced tracks. Plus, a quick perusal of P.SO’s myspace page or webpage/Bandcamp page allows a hearty audio-visual trip thorugh P.SO’s past works.
If you are into an artistic, intellectual vibe, unafraid to experiment musically, but without getting lost in eclecticism, P.SO is well worthy of your eartime.
We want to recommend a couple individual tracks, but might just save this for a full review. Trust though, this is damn fine listening, and the features, which include the likes of Homeboy Sandman, Fresh Daily, 8thW1 and Senor Kaos do nothing but make it even more worthwhile.
The thing about P.SO is that we haven’t posted anything by him yet, because we were waiting to be able to properly tell his story. He is wickedly creative, and as we said before, spoken highly by his peers and independent media. But, until we are able to bring you depth, there is no better way to familiarize yourself with P.SO, then by copping More Jelly.
