Joell Oritz, one of our inaugural “5 Reasons Why NY Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck,” and frequent subject in our e-pages, will hit the stage at Brooklyn’s Southpaw on September 30 to support his upcoming Yaowa mixtape collaboration with DJ Green Lantern and DJ Cannon. BirthplaceMag.com has been very supportive of Joell Ortiz’ work, which, as demonstrated by recent drops such as “Battle Cry,” off of his just-released Farewell Summer EP, continues to lift his reputation as a fiery rhymespitter with a strong work ethic and ever-widening appeal.
The highly-anticipated Yaowa mixtape is a prelude to the even-more-highly-anticipated Free Agent, Joell Ortiz’ full length album release on E1. There has been ongoing issues between Ortiz and E1, as well as between E1 and Ortiz’ Slaughterhouse co-star Joe Budden, the latter of which recently spilled out into the e-open.
Luckily for fans of Joell Ortiz, NY hip hop, and indeed, hip hop in general, these issues haven’t stopped Joell Ortiz from dropping highly enjoyable material lately, from the Me, Myself and I mixtape, to the aforementioned Farewell Summer.
Joining Joell Ortiz at the September 30th event, another artist from our inaugural batch of “5 Reasons…,” the young MC from the Bronx who has also caught our ear as a one-to-watch, YC The Cynic. Also expected to perform, Apollo The Great, NSR, Jah C & The Antidote and Eternia.
Southpaw is located at 125 5th Ave., between Sterling & St. Johns, in Brooklyn, NY.
Advance tickets for Joell Ortiz at Southpaw are on sale now ($12) and will be $15 at the door.
UPDATE/BONUS: The video for Joell Ortiz’ “Sing Like Bilal,” off Farewell Summer, is out. Enjoy.
