The ILLZ, hailing from New Jersey, drops a video for the Ill Tal-produced, smoothed-out and crispy cut, “Turpentine Weed,” directed by Kristopher Rey-Talley. The video, the next in their “In Between Video” series where artist and filmmaker are releasing video and song simultaneously, follows the earlier release of the video for “Dreams of Life & Beth,” a thoughtful, slow, haunting piano-and-strings laden track produced by Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man.
There is heavy artistry going on here. And we like.
The concept of the video series is clever. Each of the song/video releases will be made available leading up to August 17th, when the package in it’s entirety, will be available for download as a complete project. From what we have heard, we expect this to be a worthwhile endeavor.
The ILLZ released his first full-length project, The Pursuit LP in late 2009, a mixtape presented by DJBooth.net and the good folks at 2DopeBoyz, which found him mentioned favoribly by critics and hip hop blogs, including HipHopDX. He performed at Santos Party House on July 26, 2010, alongside heavyweights such as Joell Ortiz (one of our “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck“) and Joe Budden, and will be hitting the stage July 28, at Littlefield for HipHopDx & SoulRebelNYC’s “Generation Next” event.
We’ve been hearing The ILLZ’ name come up here and there, like on the bill for these events, and these songs and videos are a clear indication why. We’re looking forward to hearing more.
