Nicki Minaj, the Queens-bred, Young Money woman of the hip hop hour, released the video for “Your Love,” her semi-surprise hit, starring a sabre-weilding, still-undoubtedly-brolic Michael Jai White amid a colorful visual mashup of Asian culture, curtains, eye make-up and wigs. It was apparently shot back when she was a geisha, and he was a samurai.
Ha. Get it?
Anyway, Nicki has gone on the record stating that “Your Love” almost wasn’t, telling MTV she “was not planning on putting the song out at all,” but after it “leaked” and feedback was positive, (especially after her actual single release, “Massive Attack,” didn’t fare so well), she decided to roll with it. The result was a top Billboard charting hit that, to some degree, had to simmer down some of her critics.
Minaj most recently popped up as a feature on Trey Songz’ “Bottoms Up”.
We’re sure Nicki Minaj will continue to ignite all kinds of interest, backlash and controversy, and we will certainly continue to swoon watch to see what she does next. In the meantime, witness the video for “Your Love,” below.
