Hip hop is more than music, it is a culture and a collection of sub-cultures which have simultaneously intertwined, yet grown independently, since its formal existence. One particular element, the dance arm of hip hop, which performs under the umbrella of breakdancing, or B-Boying, is genius in of itself, in part for its unique and unprecedented style, but also for the incorporation and respect to dance eras which have preceded (and followed) it. As breakdancing has progressed, so have other forms of dance with strong African and African-American heritage, such as tap, and we have, over the years, been wowed by the explosive effect of combining these powerful, expressive dance genres on one stage.
Take such an atmosphere, sprinkle in a variety of performers, live music, sketch comedy and two super-talented tapping virtuosos leading the way, and you might conjure up Broadway Underground, a long running show headlined by Jared Grimes and DeWitt Fleming, Jr. The event that The New York Times once called “one sweet show: very funny, very happy and underpinned by superb live music” returns to the B.B. King Blues Club this Monday, July 5th for a 8pm show.
Now, we normally push straight hip hop ’round these parts, but there certainly should be enough representation of such at Broadway Underground, so we consider this to be well within our editorial jurisdiction. You should consider this well within where you might want to be Monday night.
