New York rap grinders Donny Goines, Torae, Esso, Skyzoo & Poca the Papergirl appeared on BET’s The Deal – The Corner segment, and talked about New York’s past, present and future place in hip hop.
Factors the artists brought up include radio, program directors, the need for hard work and emerging from the shadow of the “90s”. One of the Birthplace Magazine fave mantras of “bringing NY rap ‘forward'” was mentioned, in regards to the need for musicians to push the envelope.
Of course, we would have added to the conversation a reflection on media being a factor that has guided public opinion away from the Big Apple, as we have stated from our launch that the void of NY-centric hip hop coverage has been missing for some time, as outlets have neglected the area, choosing to simply follow the rest of the industry in focusing on other regions.
But that’s why we’re here. 🙂
