When BirthplaceMag.com was really ramping up, I heard about Wordspit. It was some random YouTube video, and here was this guy, a mini-Busta Rhymes in terms of energy (and perhaps hairstyling) if I recall correctly. It was a freestyle sort of occasion, he was highly animated, said a couple of interesting lines, and made an impression on me.
Fast forward a few months, and I was talking with BirthplaceMag.com writer Steven Ortiz, as he returned from covering Dollar Van Demos. Wordspit’s name had come up in our conversations, and as it happened, Wordspit was one of the Dollar Van Demo artists the day we were there. He went on to be featured in a national McDonalds commercial, from that appearance.
I recently attended the The Soundcheck showcase at Santos Party House (shouts to @BreyKing), and the headline featured artist was Wordspit. I noticed he also was one of the New York contingent performing at SXSW.
What does all this mean? It means that when you hear about/from/see/run into an artist this many times, in this short amount of space, you have found an artist who is one hell of a grinder. Plus, I like to think that I “called it” when noticing him so long ago.
Now, since we are still a small operation, (though growing mightily – speak to us about advertising!), we absolutely plan on sitting down and having a one on one with Mr. Spit, we just haven’t been able to set it up yet. Luckily for us, and really, for you, our good friends E & My-My at Officially Faded grabbed a hold of one of the hardest working men in New Y0rk hip hop, and got the interview goods.
Swing on over to OfficiallyFaded.blogspot.com and watch the interview (and freestyle/beatbox bonus) for yourselves.
