As mentioned in an earlier post, I recently was granted the exceptional opportunity to witness hip hop greatness, as Long Island’s own Rakim Allah rolled back through his old stomping grounds to headline a Legends of Hip Hop concert at The Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale.
Friends, family and fans filled the venue, and though the opening acts were plentiful (to the point of creating somewhat of an anxious crowd, itching for the main event), the night did not disappoint the patient, as the legendary lyricist ran through a litany of current songs and classic hits from hip hop’s Golden Era.
Opening acts included Fuse 100, Jay Godz, The Day Laborers and Conceptual Elements, as well as a high spirited performance by Jreadi, nephew to the man of the hour. The concert series, presented by Terence Trend Inc., continues on April 25, with legendary hip hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash.
Technician The DJ held down most of the DJ duties, although The R had a little showmanship surprise in store for the audience. Check the video for Rakim’s performance of his classic “I Know You Got Soul”, and check back with Birthplace Magazine, as we’ll be putting up a couple more videos from the night.
