Nicki Minaj – Massive Attack: Massive Tune or Massive Fail?

Nicki Minaj’s long-awaited debut single, “Massive Attack”, was released yesterday. The Sean Garrett and Alex The Kid produced song was debuted on Hot-97 by Funkmaster Flex.

The Queens-rasied Young Money spittress told MTV News, “You’re not gonna get the song the first time you hear it. After the second or third time, you’re gonna be like, ‘Whoa, what is this?’ It sounds nothing like anything that’s out right now.”

Well, in a way, she’s right. The track rides a studdering, rather frantic drum and synth vibe, with almost more chorus than Minaj. Random responses are mixed, though many express disappointment. Twitterer @myninecanpiss states, “nicki goin’ harrrrd on Massive Attack !!! this one’s gonna be BIG !!!!” while @RealNashty reports, “jus tried to listen to nicki minaj new song “massive attack”…I culdnt fukn do it…tht shit was #wack”.

Many agree with RealNashty.

Hype Williams directed the accompanying video, which features Amber Rose, due soon.

Now, we love us some Nicki Minaj. In a world where we try hard to focus hard on underground, overlooked New York talent, she is our guilty mainstream pleasure. But are growing increasingly disappointed at the attention given toward her image, and weirdness, rather than her skill. To us, the single is a massive failure. Even after the second and third time. It’s noisy, unneccesarily hectic and doesn’t feature enough Nicki. She has an eager, worldwide audience, on the edge of their seats for the deliverance of the next evolution of female emceeing, and she has, we believe, the talent to do it. As such, we feel that delivering this as her official debut effort, is unfortunate.

We’re all for experimentaiton, thinking outside of the box, and being musically adventurous, but we think they missed the mark on this one.

But who are we to say? Judge for yourself:
