There is a thin line between marketing, and gimmick. Between artistry, and manipulation. Announcing that you are going to release a song per week, for a year, could be something akin to a rap David Blaine, with a plan to cover himself from his feet up to his neck in peanut butter, roll around in crushed walnuts, handcuff himself in a straight jacket made of pistachio shells, suspended for a week upside down between two maple trees full of squirrels.
Ok, maybe not THAT gimmicky, but there is still a question as to whether or not someone can a) keep that pace, b) do so while maintaining interest, and c) be good enough to want to follow.
We caught wind of K. Sparks “Manic Monday” series, but haven’t gotten the chance to really check him out until now, and checking out a couple of past Manic Monday joints, plus a track or two from his album A Day In The Life (HiPNOTT Records), we can report that it’s not just gimmick.
Buy A Day In The Life, (an album recorded, as the title may suggest, in a single day by the way) and get to know the Queens MC K. Sparks a bit. Anyone who can keep this kind of consistent pace with this kind of creative approach and level of skill, requires… no… DESERVES the attention of those who would seek to find good NY-area hip hop.
