UPDATE: Diggy Simmons has signed a deal with Atlantic Records.
Diggy Simmons, son of Rev. Run, of Run DMC, and nephew of hip hop impresario Russell Simmons, leapfrogs past his previously-aspiring-rapper brother Joseph “Jojo” Simmons with a solid he-style over the Nas classic “Made You Look”, and a Phil The God-directed video to match. We will paraphrase pretty much what we see as the general consensus: that few expected Diggy to be as adapt a vocalist as he demonstrates in this release, and his abilities are a bit of a surprise. The “did-he-write-it-or-not” debate may surround the young Simmons, but the “freestyle” and video, a semi-typical but effective New York City-as-a-backdrop visual accompaniment, have opened a lot of eyes, and lit the fuse of a buzz.
The Run’s House co-star released his debut mixtape in December, 2009, entitled The First Flight, and also recently released a short display of his vocal styling over Drake’s “It’s Over” beat.
