New York Is Killing Gil Scott-Heron

Many call Gil Scott-Heron the godfather of rap. He is a legendary spoken word artist, poet, writer, singer, drug addict, criminal and pain-of-an-artist-personified. If you ever heard the words “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” that’s his. We’re not Wikipedia, do your research. He’s dope. Always has been.

And he’s back. His new album I’m New Here, his first in 16 years, is out. Gil Scott-Heron is hip hop, he is New York, and this song, “New York Is Killing Me” is hot shit.

(Editor’s note: The Manny Faces in me wants to flip this shit so bad. $10 someone else beats me to it. This is ripe for a Mos Def verse. Sigh. Anyway…)

Anyway, cop this man’s album. There are few more deserving of a hip hop consumer’s dollar than he.
