Hip hop and New York are the foundations of BirthplaceMag.com, so we welcome the chance to document the gigantic wealth of talent, information and events that falls under this umbrella. But some things… Some things are more New York hip hop than others. One of them is the Hip Hop Subway Series.
Several times during the year, the call goes out, and like migrating songbirds, a crowd purposefully meanders though the urban jungle, assembling en masse at the rear of a particular subway platform. The leader of the movement, Kid Lucky, announces the instructions. The energy is palpable. Verbal expressionists have arrived together singly to travel as one through the New York underworld, spitting, singing, beatboxing, breaking. They peacefully take over the train and ride the line, spreading their message of music, a truly urban example of Rhythmic American Poetry at its finest, in the city that birthed it.
From a Daily News article about the phenomenon:
“”It’s not just, ‘We’re going to have a party and break the law.’ It’s about connecting,” said organizer Kid Lucky, a beatboxer from the East Village whose real name is Terry Lewis. “This is New York City – it’s an artist’s city – and I don’t want people ever to forget that.”
Amen.
It goes down again this Sunday, February 21. We’ll be there!
From their Facebook page:
Where: Back of the UPTOWN 2nd Avenue F Train Platform

For the next Hip Hop Subway Series, the theme is strength. Why? Because we in the hip hop community need to strengthen our ties with each other to get us through hard economic times and violent times. Sad times and destructive times. Pride has let a lot of people lose because they did not have the strength to be humble themselves. I have seen what happens when we are strong as a community and how we start to flourish. There is strength in unity. We will demonstrate that kind of strength as we from Beatboxer Entertainment will team up for with End Of the Weak (EOW) for the fist installment of this this HHSS EOW has the longest running hip hop open mic showcase in NYC. They are the blueprint for many if not most of the hip hop open mics. We are happy to be teaming up with them. Check out their website: www.eodub.com
After the Hip Hop subway sereis we are gonna fo to Mammouns Falaffel spot on St Marks to eat and from there go to EOW for the after party (Pyramid, 101 Avenue A, NYC)!
