Canibus – Melatonin Magik Release and Southpaw Performance

Canibus, while he may have spent some time in the New York area, is not necessarily considered a NY emcee. However, he just touched down from whatever redonkulous lyrical planet he lives on, to perform for us verbal mortals and to celebrate the release of Melatonin Magik, his latest full length dictionary-set-to-music. The scene was Southpaw, the vocal onslaught, unearthly, and the NY audience, wide eyed and bushy tailed.

This is a recap of an excellent recap seen over at HipHop and Bullshit. Their quick backstory and analytical breakdown of Jamaica’s finest rap export was, in our not-so-humble opinion, spot on, and since they were there and we weren’t, we’d be blogcornballs if we wrote that first paragraph, and pointed to their videos, without sending you to them.

An excerpt, to get your reading juices flowing:

After watching him flawlessly spit every single noteworthy, complicated rhyme he’s written since hittin’ the scene in 1998, I drew only one conclusion: CANIBUS IS NOT HUMAN, HE’S A FUCKIN’ ROBOT. I mean this guy is a fuckin’ perfectly crafted Cylon from Battlestar Galactica. He commanded the crowd who amazingly repeated every one of his lines in unison. The crowd was excellent and I was happy to see that New York still has a very alive and thriving REAL Hip Hop fan base.

(That last sentence is why we’re here, so Amen brother, Amen.)
