The Myspace.com / Hot 97 sponsored “secret show” starring 50 Cent went down last night, (Nov. 23) at the Highline Ballroom in Manhattan. A strong showing of (mostly) 50 fanatics filled the venue, and quickly shook off the chill they had to endure on the 2-hour long wait on line in the “winter’s-finally-getting-here” weather with the boisterous showing by G-Trio 50, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo.
Running through a flurry of solo songs and G-unit joints, 50 raised eyebrows as Broad St. met 16th St. with Beanie Sigel hitting the stage. Spitting his verses from “Do It Again”, “Mack Bitch” and “I Go Off”, Sigel addded an exclamation point to his recent statements in the newly bubbling B vs. Jay-Z squabble, performing on Jay’s home turf. Conspicuously absent however, was Beanie performing his own eyebrow-raising diss track, How I Can Kill Jigga Man.
In all, a rambunctious display of a slice of New York hip-hop that remains solid, a reminder that despite the best-selling books, fragrances and CNBC appearances, Curtis Jackson can still rock a show.
Random notes: DJ Cipha Sounds DJ’d the warmup. Good crowd motivator that Cipha. K. Foxx and Peter Rosenberg appeared briefly at the start. 50 and ‘nem performed for just about an hour or so. “Julito” from the HBO series The Wire was in the cut. He’s a rapper too, performed the night earlier at the Elegant Hoodness Musical Program Media Fusion panel hosted by A.D. The General. Also in attendance, Porsh Delancy (insider). BP out, bong!
